“The first calotypes made in Italy have, up to “Eloge du negatif” been very rarely exhibited. The purpose of the Petit Palais is to attract the public’s awareness on these genuine incunabula, focussing on the history of photography. The paper negatives and the salted paper prints created by the artists, known at that period as the “Sun painters”, mid-nineteenth-century amateur photographers, display the various uses of the paper processes in Italy: from the beginning of photo-reportage to the shooting of landscapes, monuments, works of art or genre portraits”.
