¶ Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), Orientalist, professor and colonial advisor to the Dutch government, was one of the first Europeans who had expressly converted to Islam in order to set foot in the Holy Muslim city of Mecca. He gives a description of the Meccan sanctuary and of the public and private life of the Meccans as observed from February to August 1885. When entering the city of Mecca he called this "the great event of my life" and "the beginning of a medieval dream". The scientific results of his visit were presented in this famous work which brought him international fame. The rare volume of plates is unique in that they contain the first detailed photographs of Mecca, the first portraits of Meccans of different social classes (from sheiks, sharifs, members of the middle class to slaves), and the first portraits of hajjis from different parts of the world, from Yemen to Java. - Cf. D. v.d. Wal. Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje: The first Western photographer in Mecca, 1884-85. (2011); Henze V, 177.
