In the Photographs section of the forthcoming British and Continental Pictures and Prints auction on the 28th March 2018 at 25 Blythe Road, there is a small but intriguing group of 19th and 20th century photographs, including ‘Man and a Boy on a park bench in Central Park’ by Diane Arbus, estimated at £3000-£5000, as well as a five photographs by Brassai of Picasso, including ‘Picasso in his Studio’. The estimates for these photographs range from £1000-£2,500.
There is also a vintage silver print of Bobby Soxers,1950, by Weegee. Weegee, (1899-1968) worked as a press photographer in New York in the 1930s and 1940s documenting the widespread war between rival Cosa Nostra families during that period. Using a specially tuned radio he was able to follow the city s emergency service first responders and police and took graphic photographs of crime scenes. The name Weegee coined as a phonetic rendering of Ouija was given to him because of the eerily swift arrival at crime scenes following their reports.
He also collaborated with directors such as Jack Donohue and Stanley Kubrick working with the latter as the still photographer for Dr Strangelove.
The auction takes place at 11am on Wednesday 28th March, and the photograph section starts at lot 236. See www.25blytheroad.com
