Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the exciting discovery of over 220 photographs by the British photographer Linnaeus Tripe of India and Burma taken in the mid-1850s including 42 photographs of which no other prints are recorded, and five previously unknown photographs by Tripe.
These photographs were presented by the photographer to the Governor-General of India, the 1st Marquess of Dalhousie and have come by descent to the present owner.
The sale also includes early photographs of Siam by Francis Chit, Japan by Felice Beato, Egypt and the Soudan by Pierre Trémaux, Hong Kong by Floyd, Mecca and Medina by Snouck Hurgronje, Africa by James Chapman together with other topographical photographs including Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Goa, Constantinople, Venice and the Holy Land.
