Hi, I am looking into the history and evolution of old pilgrim trails in the Garhwal Himalayas, India. Would be grateful if anybody could advise me about photographs of this region taken during 19th and early to mid- 20th century.

Furer-Haimendorf worked as an ethnographer in the Himalayas from the 1930s to 1970s. He concentrated mostly in Arunchal Pradesh and Nagaland but you might find something from your area. J.P.Mills was a contemporary of Haimendorf's, though he wasn't as prolific a photographer. His collection might also be worth looking at. The Haimendorf images and some films are available on-line from the School of Oriental and African Studies at http://digital.info.soas.ac.uk/cgi/c/Furer-Haimendorf/F%C3%BCrer-Ha.... Unfortunately the Mills images are currently off line.

Thanks, Michael, I had zeroed down on him a few days back; some of the books are available in India, some not. Yet all of them seem to have photographs of the British Raj, the cities and architectural monuments,except that of Samuel Bourne who has several pictures of Ootacamund, Kashmir etc. But my focal issue still eludes me :-( Some pics and sketches were found at the British Library site, though.

I personally don't, but there is this dealer who regularly exhibits at the London Photograph Fair, who specialises in all things early photography in India, and the Himalayas included. He is based out of Bath, and his website can be found here.
