  • The University of Arizona, Tucson has two undergraduate degree offerings depending on your interest.  The BA in art history and education with emphasis in photography offers two survey courses in 19th century and 20th century histories as well as subject seminar courses and independent studies.  The BFA in photography is offered with required courses in history of photography as well as studio photography practical courses.  The Center for Contemporary Photography is on campus, as well as Special Collection through the University Libraries hold non-circulating collections of 19th and 20th century photographs.  Additionally, the Arizona State Museum's collections of photographs present emphasis in the Southwest and anthropology with additional separate collections that students have available for research.  Across the street from the University is the Arizona Historical Society and its photography collection.

  • I know this is an old link but I didn't see this mentioned. This is a great podcast in conjunction with a course taught at the College of DuPage in Illinois.

  • In the US, the University of Arizona has a strong History of Photography offering.  The BA itself would be in Art History, but it is possible to take several individual courses and seminars in the History of Photography toward that BA.  The University of Arizona houses the Center for Creative Photography, which is an excellent resource.

  • Dear Michael,

the part-time History of Art course at Birkbeck, University of London, includes a substantial amount of photography, with a chance to specialise in it in the third and fourth year of your course (and to some extend earlier too - it depends on your choice of courses and essays).

Patrizia Di Bello (Lecturer in History of Photography on the course)
  • There is a Visual Culture course at the Australian National University, Canberra, that included photography. But wouldnt you think the main visual language since the mid 19th century would warrant a BA.
Folks maybe the time has come to campaign for BA courses.

  • Thanks Michael - I was aware of the Sothebys MA course as well as the De Montfort one. Such a shame there is no BA option anywhere. High time someone somewhere started one

If I may add in to the discussion - there is a module that covers 19th century Photography in the one-year academic course (MA in Photography: contemporary & historical, London) offered by the auction house, Sotheby's (http://www.sothebysinstitute.com/photography.html).
  • Thanks Luke, I will look at the St Andrews undergraduate History of Art course. Don't you find it odd that a BA course just in History of Photography is not offered by anyone? (I must check in the States) After all what could be a more interesting and important thing to study. Mind you in the 1970s I think only three unis offered History of Art as a BA

  • There are no BA courses in the history of photography. At best you may get a HoP module as part of a history of art course. Check out De Montfort University's MA course http://dmu.ac.uk/faculties/art_and_design/pg_courses/photographic-h...
