Britannia's Electric Portraits Ltd

Has anyone done any research into this firm, which appears to have operated across around 13 different towns from 1917 until the 1960s? I have been trying to discover details of the individuals behind the company, but sadly little has survived about what must have been a moderately successful enterprise. The little I have discovered so far can be found at http://www.fadingimages.uk/britannia.asp.  Does anyone know who was behind this firm? Thanks.

  • Thanks very much Michael for these additional items about the firm. I will add these into the narrative.

A news item in the British Journal of Photography, 22 May 1931, notes that Nuva Portraits has purchased the business of Britannia's Electric Portraits Ltd of 51 Cross Cheaping, Coventry and it will be carried on under their name. I have a couple of other references on the PDF here: Britannia.pdf

  • Thanks Brett, I was not aware of this excellent piece of research by George Caulton - I need to re-write some of the material about the Lincoln studio.

Thanks for this interesting history, Les, which sheds a bit of light on the firm which had a couple of branches in Derbyshire (Chesterfield and Ilkeston), so is of relevance to my own research.
It might be worth mentioning, if you hadn't already seen it, George Caulton's very useful T.I.C. Horseshoe brand post card dating guide, http://www.photodetective.co.uk/horseshoe.html
which suggests that your early postcard (#18872) from "Britannias 259 High Street, Lincoln" may have been taken in 1920-1921.
    Regards, Brett
