Information and discussion on all aspects of British photographic history

I met Charles Cloney (Mister Cloney - he didn't encourage familiarity) a number of times in 1995 and 1996 when he was selling images - mainly ambrotypes - at the lower end of Portobello Road. I had no idea until after he had died that he had some very important early daguerreotype plates in his possession. He spoke very little about himself or his own interests. I was buying the run-of-the-mill pieces from his collection, I suppose, but they were fine images at low prices, and I snapped them up. Long live the Mister Cloneys of our world!
