Famille Royale De France

Hello everyone - Have just uploaded a print of the French royal family. Despite many online searches I can find no detailed information regarding the print and would be grateful if anybody could shed any light on it.

It is a picture of the French royal family entitled:

'Le Ciel n'est pas plus pur que le fond de leur Coeur' - which means 'The sky is no more to the bottom of their hearts'

The portraits are of:

Princess Louise-Marie; Princess Clotilde (who later became Queen of Sardinia); Princess Victoire; Princess Adelaide; Princess Elisabeth and SAR Madame M. Therese Charlotte who was the eldest daughter of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

The inscriptions underneath each portrait give the date of birth and the date of death of each of the Princesses with the exception of SAR Madame M. Therese Charlotte which only shows her date of birth - 19th December 1778. (she actually died in 1851 but this is not shown).

In the bottom left-hand corner of the print are the words:

A Paris, Chez Jean fils, Quai Des Augustines, No.29

In the bottom right-hand corner are the words:

Deposse A la Direction Generale

Many thanks Chris

  • Many thanks for your response Michael - I have to confess that too many years have passed for me to remember my school girl french so had to resort to using an online translation site!!! Have to say your paraphrasing makes far more sense.
I am still trying to find out more about the print but it is proving quite a difficult task - but I will persevere. Thanks again
  • Your translation doesn't quite catch the flavour of the original, Chris. I would paraphrase it as follows: "Not [even] the sky is more pure than the depths of their hearts."
