James Anderson

British photographer James Anderson was born Isaac Atkinson (1813-1877), moved to Paris to become a painter and changed his name to William Nugent, and then moved to Rome and took up photography and changed his name to James Anderson.

None of these names are very difficult or particularly foreign. Does anyone know why he changed his name multiple times?

I am curating an exhibition on 19th-century photography of Italy - Travels in Italy: a 19th-Century Journey Through Photography, and am curious. I haven't been able to find any information concerning this.
