Information and discussion on all aspects of British photographic history

James William D'Anter - London Photographer Approx 1881 - 1902

Hello all,

I've been searching for some five years now for examples of my Great Great Grandfathers work. I must have checked through thousands of CDV's and annoyed countless Ebay sellers without success!

James William D'Anter was a North London photographer from at least 1881 (91 Beaconsfield Rd, Tottenham). Later in partnership with Allan Ferris Thomas at 147 Seven Sisters Road, Islington. On retirement the 147 Seven Sisters Road business seems to have changed ownership at least twice and operated under different names until at least 1921 so must have been a viable business!

He also seems to have some interest in a patent for an appliance to retouch photographic negatives with a Thomas Stephen Bruce (Patent 24816 November 30 1905).

Has anyone seen any of James D'Anter's work? I'm wondering now whether he was a commercial photographer rather than private.

Any thoughts/ideas on how I could progress this would be greatly appreciated.

John

It might be worth checking with www.cartedevisite.co.uk and see if it has any cartes/photographs.

Thanks Michael. Very interesting site. I have emailed the site owner to see if they are aware of anything.
