John Lemmon Russell (1846 - 1915)

John Lemmon Russell is a distant relative of mine and  I am researching his life and career. I have been told by a very knowledgeable researcher that something purporting to be JL Lemmon's personal photograph album was sold on ebay (I don't know exactly when).

I was wondering if anyone in the group knew of the whereabouts of any personal photographs of JL or of his family (including of course his father James Russell).

Regards

Peter

    Hi Peter

You may be already aware, but John Lemmon Russell (1846-1915) features in the current PhotoHistorian (No. 195/Spring 2023). If not, you can download my article about photography of the 1902 Coronation via my blog - https://pressphotoman.com

It includes two photos of John Lemmon Russell (one a long shot) taken from the Underwood & Underwood Collection at the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, New York.

I have more information about J. Russell & Sons gathered during my U&U PhD research that I'd be happy to share if that is of interest.

  • Yes it has, but I am a volunteer at the cemetery so if you want to know who is buried in the grave, dates, their ages etc I can look on the cemetery records.

  • Thank you for your post, Simon.

I have been told that the inscription on the simple gravestone has worn away, which is a bit of a shame.

  • John Lemmon Russell is buried on the east side of Highgate Cemetery

  • It seems most everything is under Russell and Sons. I was able to get more hits without the stupid Son's with apostrophe and using a proximity search of "Russell" within 6 words of "Sons. " Eliminating And "&" and "ruassell, James, and sons.

It's a mess. Sorry but mu intern just arrived.

Here's what I've found so far.

  • Thank you very much for this.

The material is very interesting. The place name is "Worthing", which is on the South Coast of England. George Fielder is a known employee of the Russell family. It is a pity that the article does not make clear which son of James was running the shop in Worthing, but I can try and work it out. 1879 is a very helpful clue.

    Thank you again; much appreciated.

From what I can determine James is the father and John is one of the sons, thus Russell and Sons will provide some information.

This extract from 1879, Pritchard's Studios of Europe is about Russell and Sons in Worthington, a short hop from Birmingham, 34 miles to be exact.

Little comes up searching for a John Russell, found  a John L. in Salem Mass. an MD, not likely.

I dig around some more for the Russell and Sons connection.

  • Hello Dick

Thank you for this. Lord John Russell was a different person, who was a British prime minister.

John Lemmon Russell, who was not a prime minister,  did have a photographic studio in Tuffnel Park North London. He took a lot of photographs of British and foreign royalty. Any leads to Russell the photographer  would be appreciated.

    Regard

    Peter

There are 5 references to a John Russell within 6 words of "Tuffnel." Note that there is twop "f's here and one in the rps fellowship registry.

It is however on journal I do not have
