Salt Print By Claude Marie Ferrier or Hugh Owen , Printed by Nikolaas Heinemann.I think the edge fading actually adds to the allure, giving the image a sense of time and somehow, curiously, astronomy.

  • This image is from a negative by Claude-Marie Ferrier and was printed in France by Robert Bingham. It was used to illustrate the photogaphically-illustrated presentation copies of the Reports by the Juries of the 1851 Great Exhibitio, published in 1852.

    Nikolaas Henneman was not awarded the contract to undertake the printing, though he had been initially engaged to take photographs for the Reports.
