Does anyone recognise this school?

The location of the school in this image of young women practising tennis and lacrosse has eluded me for years. The other images in the album were predominantly Scottish, so I would love to think it was a Scottish school, but have no leads whatsoever at the moment. If anyone can suggest where it might be, I'd be…See More

John Hannavy replied to Nigel Richards's discussion Ambrotype - Photograph or Photograph of a painting?
"Hi Nigel, A belated addition to the conversation.... Painting - and by an artist who has the sun shining from two different directions. The east face of the tower is in sunlight, while the east gable of the church is in shadow. In a romantic…"

John Hannavy replied to Damian Hughes's discussion British Photographic Education 1945-60
"There certainly were other photography courses before 1966. The one I did was run at what was then Manchester College of Science & Technology (later UMIST) where photography courses had been offered from around 1947 until 1966, under the…"

"Many thanks Brett, I've emailed them, and will post any further information they can give me. The card, I thought, was dark grey, but looking at it again, it may indeed be faded green. You date range matches what i thought. Good to have the…"

"Dear John, First, can I say that I very much enjoyed your book, "Victorian Photographers at Work," which I purchased and read recently, and have learnt a great deal from it. I suggest that you ask Bozi Mohacek and his enthusiatic…"

Late Cabinet Print

Hi All,Can anyone date the mount of this unusual cabinet image - it is not a style I have seen before. And if there is anyone out there who could throw some light on the cars, that would be a real bonus! The cabinet print was discovered in Scotland, so we may assume it is of British origin.ThanksJohnSee More

John Hannavy replied to Gael Newton's discussion Beard colonial patentees
"Hi Gael, I have been doing a lot of research recently on Beard's Scottish and Irish Patents - the results are published in the latest Daguerreian Annual - and I have to tell you Beard did patent his 'Improvements' in both Ireland and…"

John Hannavy replied to Mark Haworth-Booth's discussion Wedding photography
"Hi Mark, Thought I'd add these two pictures, as they demonstrate my suggested link between ball gowns and wedding dresses, and the link between QV and white weddings. The first is obviously one of Fenton's royal portraits 1853/4, the…"
