While working through the British Journal of Photography I came across a reference to John Traill undertaking a photographic expedition to Orkney in June 1860 (listed by Peter Stubbs on his Edinphoto website) . He read a paper on it to the Edinburgh Photographic Society on 17 July 1861, published in the Journal on 1 August p. 269.
