Birmingham Library Acquires Francis Bedford, Tour in the East, 1862

Birmingham Library and Archive Services has acquired a rare set of the suite  of  3  portfolios  entitled  "Photographic  Pictures Made By Mr. Francis Bedford  During  the  Tour in the East in which, by command, he accompanied His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales" , published by Day & Son, 1862. These contain 172  prints, each  approximately 8 3/4x11 inches (22.2x27.9  cm.), many with Bedford's credit in the negative with a single photograph mounted to each leaf.  The portfilios were…

Art Fund Award for Birmingham Library

Following the recent award of £11,750 to acquire works by Daniel Meadows and Homer Sykes, Birmingham Central Library has been awarded a further £6000 by The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity, to purchase 12 prints Anna Fox, one of the UK’s leading photographers. Work of all three photographers was included in the Legacy section of the recent exhibtion Knight of the Camera: The Photographs of Sir Benjamin Stone (2007)

Michael Hallett / Stefan Lorant Archive

Birmingham Library and Archive Services and pleased to announce the acquisition of the The Michael Hallett / Stefan Lorant Archive. This body of material relates to the specific area of picture journalism (modern photojournalism) collected by Michael Hallett between 1990 and 2007. It represents the most significant collection of ephemera and publications relating to Stefan Lorant outside of the United States.

The Art Fund helps Birmingham Central Library secure 70s photographs

Birmingham Central Library has been awarded £11,750 by The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity, to purchase prints by two of the leading British documentary photographers of the 1970s, who were inspired by amateur Victorian photographer Sir Benjamin Stone.



The acquisition includes a total of twenty-four photographs by Daniel Meadows and Homer Sykes, who documented the lives, customs and festivals of British people some eighty years after Stone toured the country… Continue
