What do we see when looking at photographs of the countryside? What might we see and discover about the changes in rural England since photographers started recording it?

Using examples from the extensive MERL collections, this session, one of a series of masterclasses by Monument Fellow, Dr Jonathan Brown, will consider how we perceive the countryside through the camera lens.

You can see some examples of MERL's collection of photographs in an online exhibition as part of the Digitisation of Countryside Images Project (http://www.reading.ac.uk/merl/research/countrysideimages/merl-list.asp)
