Once again the time has come to dare to present a broad survey: To mark its 40th anniversary, the Fotostiftung Schweiz will present a new history of photography in both book and exhibition form. It is based on about 70 photobooks which reflect developments in Swiss photography from 1900 to today. The book has always played a vital role in the presentation, dissemination and passing down of photographs – a insight that allows new perspectives on the history and the current state of the medium. Instead of separate individual photographs and celebrated vintage prints, what moves to the fore here are sequences, series and other possible forms of visual narrative. When the photographic model is translated into a printed and designed form, a new, independent work emerges. The book provides an aesthetic, historical or political resonance chamber for the images, in which their potential can fully unfold.
