With the special "The birth of photography.Milestones of the Gernsheim Collection presents "theInternational Forum Photography (FIP) of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim Highlights of two centuries of history of photography. The main sponsor is the BASF SE. In homage to the pioneer photo Helmut Gernsheim (1913-1995), the exhibition brings together on the occasion of his 100th Birthday for the first time after half a century, the two parts of his unique collection of photographs. Among the many historical milestones photo a very special highlight is seeing: the "first photograph of the World", a landscape photograph taken by Joseph Niépce Nicéphore in 1826.
A total of 250 exhibits, the exhibition offers of 9September 2012 to 6th January 2013 a hitherto never been there look at the photograph of the 19and 20 Century, with their different positions - the visitor follows the development of images of the first daguerreotypes of the Victorian era through to the masterpieces of contemporary photographers who shape the collective memory today. The exhibition was made possible through the cooperation of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, which preserves the historic part of the Gernsheim Collection.
