Event Description

This exhibition brings together photographs from the Stockport image archive from the 1800s, photographs by John Darwell commissioned by Stockport Council in 1985 and objects from Stockport Councils industrial collection. Darwell's photographs depict people at work in Stockport factories and workshops. These images capture the people and industrial processes employed mainly in textile manufacturing. 25 years on, the industrial landscape of Stockport has changed dramatically; only two companies featured in Darwell''s work are still running. This collection of images show a town at an important stage in its history, before factories closed and different kinds of industry began.
