HUNTER PENROSE

I have a Hunter Penrose process/repro?  camera, with an 18" Taylor Hobson lens.
I would like to know if there is anyone on this blog that knows anything about these cameras as I am considering selling it. that is if i can lift the thing out of my studio, it weighs at least 35 kilos! are these things saleable? I have heard of people using them as coffee tables, putting plate glass on top, it has the right height for that, I have also a selection of film holders for it, made in mahogany and brass, down to 5x4 inches. What I would really like to know is, is there a specialist market for these things, and if so where?

  • There are a few wet plate photographers I could put you in touch with looking for HP cameras, Peter.

  • Hi

Just found this forum. I also have a Hunter Penrose process/gallery camera (complete with railway track!)

I should try to sell it as I don't have the space anymore.

  • Just seen this post.

Well done Nicholas on selling the HP camera. I've been messageing/emailing with the buyer and he's very excited with his purchase. Love my HP camera. Looking forward to seeing what the new owner does with his.

  • I will be shipping to Korea with the buyer paying, I think around 5-600 pounds will cover it,but it not my problem, he is paying.

Congratulations on selling the camera... are you shipping it to Korea ?

  • The shipping's going to be fun...and expensive.

As some of you have already noticed, i decided to try to sell my Hunter Penrose on ebay. I put it up for auction without reserve, (minimum bid 1 pound) there was a huge amount of interest from throughout the world, most of it from China, Vietnam, Japan and Korea. It was sold for one thousand and five pounds to a korean artist that wil use the camera for wet plate photography, I am of course pleased that I received a sensible price for it, but even more pleased that it be used for many years to come, instead of gathering dust in my studio

  • It was actually sold on Ebay UK and not on the Danish market, although a Norwegian and a German bidder were up in the high 900s as were several bidders from England.

The sale price of the Hunter Penrose did cause quite a stir in the online alt-process communities. When trying to dispose of the one in my museum collection in 2012 they were selling for less than £200, one going as low as £60-70 if I recall correctly. That however is the UK and not the Danish market.

Excellent that it will be going to a new home, and hopefully to be used once again.
