Portraits from a 19th Century Asylum

Portraits from a 19th Century Asylum

These cartes de visite are portraits from a psychiatric hospital, presumably in France or Germany and were taken most likely in the 1880s. In some cases the patients' names and their affliction are written on the back of the card. Small pinholes indicate the photos were pinned to a board, the patients' files or possibly to a loop the doctor may have carried on rounds.
