The Archive and the book “A Faithful Likeness” written by Pauline and Bernard Heathcote covers early British photography from its beginnings to 1855 it is a mine of information for researchers of early photography . Well, he's a bit of a mystery then. I think he may have been one Daniel Bernard, born c.1850 at Crako, Austria, who is shown in the 1881 Census at 12 Smythen Street, Exeter, and describes himself as a Picture Frame Dealer. Not a big jump from that profession to photographer.
Allan - Have you come across an Exeter photographer named Monsieur Bernard working in Somerset? I have a cabinet card-sized group photo taken at Quantock Lodge in Somerset, by M. Bernard of 8 Alphington St, Exeter. He is not mentioned in CG Scott's list for Devon.
