Pauline Heathcote Archives Bromley House Library.

Pauline Heathcote’s archives in the care of Eric Butler at Bromley House Library have been the cornerstone of our research into Somerset Photography . The Archive and the book “A Faithful Likeness” written by Pauline and Bernard Heathcote covers early British photography from its beginnings to 1855 it is a mine of information for researchers of early  photography . Well, he's a bit of a mystery then.  I think he may have been one Daniel Bernard, born c.1850 at Crako, Austria, who is shown in the 1881 Census at 12 Smythen Street, Exeter, and describes himself as a Picture Frame Dealer.  Not a big jump from that profession to photographer.

Allan - Have you come across an Exeter photographer named Monsieur Bernard working in Somerset?  I have a cabinet card-sized group photo taken at Quantock Lodge in Somerset, by M. Bernard of 8 Alphington St, Exeter.  He is not mentioned in CG Scott's list for Devon.
