Profile Information

My main research addresses ‘photographic philately’.  That is to say, I am interested in any and all connections between photography, photographers and the postal authorities around the world.  Although there are no strict boundaries, much of the material falls into  one of three areas: (a) The history of photography as told in stamps; (b) stamps celebrating or commemorating the lives and work of photographers and (c) the use of photographic images in stamp design. But then there is cinematography, postal history and so on………….

This work builds on the early contributions of Arthur Gill, Fred Spira and Cyril Permutt.  Whilst there are many contemporary examples,  I have found it useful to look at the topic in three  time periods,  1839-1989,  1990 – 2000., and 2001 to the present.

Apart from portraits of Heads of State, numerous ‘famous’ photographs have been used in stamp design, for example The Migrant Mother (Dorothea Lange), Sir Winston Churchill (Yousuf Karsh) and Noire et Blanche (Man Ray) but one of the most interesting is Bluenose, a stamp from 1929 designed using the work of photographer Wallace Robinson MacAskill.  The schooner’s captain and its naval architect have also been celebrated on stamps.
