Folding Wooden Strut camera ID.

Hello All,I've just added this camera to my collection and wondered if somebody could help with the maker. It's a 1/4 plate, with polished Mahogany or Teak, and Aluminium. It has many features that indicate Shew & Co, but has no makers badge on it. The "cut out" and stop, along the aluminium focus screen slide can be seen on the Xit range of Shew cameras, but I can't find that lens and shutter combination on. The leather carry handle has "Excelsior No 8", stamped into it, but that hasn't…See More

"Rare shutter. The writing on the selector means Kenngott made it for the British market.  T/I - Time/Instant. For the French it would be P/I - Pose/Instantané For the German Z/M - Zeit/Moment"

Yes, I thought the same thing. I do think it's almost certain that Watkinson made the camera, or at a push Wilby, for Taylor's. Strange how little there is on the internet though.

I had intended to copy the two pages but it will be a few days before I get the camera set up. I have a 1/4 plate from Taylor's Drug  and have not managed to find an advert for it, they probably advertised locally or in non-photographic papers.

I found a reference to a company by the name of Solomon on www.earlyphotography.co.uk and they operated out of Guilford Street in London (no "d") but I think yours has the "d"?

I don't think it's online, Gerry. Maybe ask him to scan the page and attach to an email. Might not tell you more than he's given you already but it's something!

Hi again Gerry,
Did no-one on the other site manage to sort this out for you?
Hope you're well,
Regards,
Gordon
