I would be interested to hear members' reactions to the posted photograph, as I have not encountered one like it before.  The original is a carte-de-visite, bearing an early Leamington imprint of H.…Continue

"Many thanks, Paul.  It can't have been an easy decision to take to cut all that talent and knowledge in the Library, but it could take a very long time indeed to recover from it, and it will be very much more difficult to recoup.  We…"

Birmingham City Library Photographic Collection

Hello.  Having the late lamented Pete James of the Birmingham City Library called to mind, can anyone tell me what the current status of the photographic collection there might now be?  Is there anybody there with a curatorial knowledge of the collection, or has the entire enterprise been mothballed?  I would be very grateful to know - I haven't yet forgiven Birmingham…See More

Siege of Paris?

I'm posting an untitled photograph that I suspect was taken in Paris during the Prussian siege during 1870/71. It's one from a stereoscopic pair, and the tones are somewhat faded, but in the foreground can be seen a wooden manual fire pump, together with its eight man crew who, from their military-style caps, might be French soldiers. The side of the pump has the word DUCLAIR painted on it, perhaps either the name of the pump's manufacturer, or just possibly the name of the town down the Seine…See More

I must firstly apologise that this is not a British photographic enquiry, but I would be very grateful to know whether any members might have ready access either to hard copies or to an online resource of French local trade directories - les annuaires commerciaux.  The localities concerned are specifically Le Touquet and Nice, covering the period between 1920 and 1940.  During this time a firm of street photographers - Philo-Ciné - took pictures of passers by, including holidaying British…See More

Hi Peter, Thanks for accepting my invitation. I have been collecting Bedford for about 10 years, concentrating mostly on early works including his lithography in the early 1840's - 1860's and his photography between about 1853 -1868. I checked my inventory and came up with only 3 images related to Ludlow: Feathers Inn c. 1860, Ludlow Castle (Principal Front) c.1860, and a cdv: Ludlow Church and Mill Street, from Whitcliffe c.1865. I have another photograph I want to send you that I am trying to identify. It is an albumen print and corresponding waxed paper negative of a castle tower. Not sure where it is, but I wonder if it might be Ludlow castle. I'll send that separately. Thanks for looking....

Hi peter,

Thanks again for your reply, it's always lovely to see new images by Bedford - his output was immense and I guess we'll never see the total. No problem with direct contact. My mail address is clive.landen@live.co.uk.

best,

Clive.

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for your full and informative mail regarding the Francis Bedford view, 'Ludlow Castle from Whitcliffe'. Yes you are right, the image measures 7" x 5.50" so your attribution would seem correct. I enclose two other views, both by Bedford 1). 'Feathers Inn - Ludlow', which is from his large scale series published by Day & Son and measures 11.375" x 9.50" on 18" x 14" board. This carries with it a back label (which I enclose also). 2). 'Ludlow Castle, Doorway to Norman Chapel' and is credited 'Bedford' both in  letterpress on the front of the mount and interestingly a pencil inscription and signature under the image.

I am currently investigating whether this pencil signature in in fact by Bedford. This one measures 7.00" x 5.25" on 14.25" x 10.50" board. The gent posing beyond the entrance is I believe one of Bedford's sons, who as you most likely know, appeared in many of his views. I enclose both images images in a separate mail as the file sizes I think are too large.

kind regards,

Clive Landen.

Hello Peter,

I have recently joined British Photographic History and your name was mentioned to me by Paula Fleming. She tells me of your passion for compiling photographic images of Ludlow and I wondered if you could help me in attributing the enclosed image of Ludlow Castle. First of all, do you know this image and secondly, I believe it is by Francis Bedford, someone who my own collection is based upon, but am not sure. Can you help throw some light on this one?

regards,

Clive landen
