"Here in the UK we seem to be somewhat behind the curve, set by the Billy the Kid carpetbaggers. One wonders when he, Billy, found time to shoot anyone - given that he spent so much time posing for dags and ambros: they should be cheap as chips.…"

Cavendish and Monde Laboratoires.

Colleagues and friends who will have seen David Haynes notification drawing attention to the new addition of historical photographic images to the Cambridge digital Library, might be unaware of the threat hanging over the Cavendish and Monde Laboratories where scientific research and experiments took place over a period of nearly 100 years by James Clark-Maxwell, JJ…

Exhibition: Eyes on Taiwan

The following site give a good description of the current exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts which includes 22 John Thomson images acknowledging the source from which the origination was taken (by me!) courtesy of the Wellcome Trust Library which takes an extremely enlightened view with regard for the use of their material for academic purposes, in particular,…

Contact information for Nancy Keeler?

Dear Colleagues,

I seem to have lost touch with Nancy Keeler who I knew during the time that he was living in Paris, which was some time ago. If anyone knows of her current whereabouts, in the US, I presume pleas send her my contact details

Michael, Thanks for your note.  I found the image at a local flea market and didn't quite know what it was until I got home and did a little research - I did have a suspicion that it was Shakespeare's home.

Thanks again, Dave

Thank you!  I will try the ferro sulfate again, but with more restrainer - the last time I tried, I got a foggy 'black rectangle'  (underexposed and overdeveloped I think).  Can you suggest a formula?  Would it be your average collodion developer - or does it need adjustments?

Knowing you used iron is a great help, and something I can explore.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.

Nice to hear from you, Mike. I know the material you are speaking about, but unlike Terry, we have not done any research on it. We have always liked China and have between 2 and 4 small groups of material each of which possibly includes material by this same circle of late 1850s photographers working near Shanghai. You could have a look if you think it would be helpful.

BTW, we have a carte de visite of Ernest Lacan with an envelope (dated?) sent to Talbot when he stayed in a Parisian hotel. Would this possibly help your chronology?

Best,

Ken
