British photographic history

Information and discussion on all aspects of British photographic history

Can anyone point me to a source of information about the publisher / photographer J. Kuhn in 19th-century Paris? I've just bought a huge albumen print of a cathedral interior, and can't find which it might be in any of the standard UK, US, or Irish archives. Any tips to digitized search engines for France? Thank you!

J Kuhn was active in Paris from 1885. He used the dry plate-process. His company was named "Compagnie Photographique"and was situated at the fashionable Rue de Rivoli 170-174-220, Paris. He was photographer of the Duke d' Orléans in 1890. He published photographic books, pictures of various countries and celebrities. He was mentioned in the trade almanac Didot-Bottin in 1891.

My source: Repertoire des photographes Parisiens du XIXe siécle, author Francois Boisjoly.

I suggest you to look at the French website gallica.bnf.fr. BNF stands for the French national library.  You also can look at the data base of the French museums Joconde: http://www.culture.gouv.fr/documentation/joconde/fr/pres.htm

Good luck with your research

Hi, here's a link to some of his work with a bit of background information. I have a couple of postcard portraits of his so he was probably still in business around 1905.
