Information and discussion on all aspects of British photographic history

Does anyone know if the thin paper covers for Cartes de Visite and Cabinet Cards had a name, what were they called? Two of the attached are by Percy Lund & Co, Bradford, England.

Thanks

Tony

The excellent Leeds & Bradford Photographic Studios website https://sites.google.com/site/leedsandbradfordstudios/home has considerable detail on Percy Lund & Co, such as a "price list of consumables for the professional photographer" from the December 1887 edition of The Photographers World, which includes the following item:

·          Tissue covers carte de visite white 4d per 1000, pink 9d per 1000. Cabinet white 9d per 1000, pink 1/- per 1000

So "tissue covers" would seem to be one answer!

Hi Tony, Ron Cosens just did a nice article on these that we call "tissues" as Michael confirms for an article in the journal of the Photographic Collectors Club of Great Britain. He may be able to forward you the article. Cheers! Marcel

thanks Michael and Marcel for your help,

best wishes

Hi, Tony. I am just catching up after Christmas and I will now email you a copy of my recent article. It will be a free download on my website www.cartedevisite.co.uk in a couple of weeks time.  What is your email address?Ron

thanks Ron, email address is trenoweth@xtra.co.nz

Very cheeky, but I'd love to have a copy too, if you're feeling indulgent, Ron!

Hi Tony

You may be interested in this advert placed by Percy Lund in his Photographers World Journal dated September 1889. The design matches one of your examples.

Hi Tony:

I've only heard of them being referred to as 'tissues'.  I'll ask around and let you know what the feedback is.

John.

Oh, I see the answer has been found, thanks to Michael, Marcel and Steve.

Just to add a little to this posting. I have managed to come across a box of unused Art Tissues by Percy Lund and these are being referred to as Japanese Art Tissues, also a sample sheet where several art tissues are being shown on the same sheet.
