Comment by Sheila Whittingham on January 22, 2013 at 9:41 Thankyou john
What an interesting photograph. My ancestor came home with a Russian wife although he had a legal wife in England, and I have to smile when I have two death certs. of two ladies both claiming to be his widow.!! I dont suppose I will find out exactly where his studio was or who he worked for papers supplied by the House of Commons archives just stated he was advised to leave Moscow as the British couldn't guarantee his safety, and he and his wife were imprisoned for 24 hours in Moscow.

Ron..you do have a photo by my Moscow chappie and you sent me a copy some years back.Camile Roman Stortz.I have been researching the three gents for nearly 10 years, they are Philip Christian Stortz, my g.g.Grandfather, his son Camile, and another great Grandfather's cousin named Thomas Cowdrey.
Comment by Ron Cosens on January 21, 2013 at 10:50 Happy to help. Ron
Comment by Marcel Safier on January 21, 2013 at 9:46 Hello Sheila, perhaps we can start by you revealing the names of your photographer relations? I assist Ron Cosens, who is on this list and who has a massive database of British photographers (his website is www.cartedevisite.co.uk). Whilst we may not have info from within Russia we may very well have info on your relations' activities within Great Britain. Cheers! Marcel
Comment by Sheila Whittingham on January 21, 2013 at 9:10 Hello,
I recently joined the group,as I am researching the three photographers in my family and wondered if there is any information on early 20th century photographers in Moscow.? My great grandmothers brother was a photographer around the home counties in different towns, but sometime around 1904 he disapears from British records and resurfaces, coming back on a refugee ship in 1920 from Moscow fleeing the revolution, passenger list has him as Photographer.I have many details, but just wondered if I could pin down the years he was in Moscow.
Regards Sheila.
Comment by Rob Whalley on November 29, 2012 at 19:01 Hi, I've just joined the group. This winter I am trying to bring to fruition my long standing and rather parochial interest in the early photographers in and around Blackburn, Lancashire. I'd be interested in hearing from any member who might have any such cdvs (or any other images for that matter) or who might be able to point me in the right direction.
Just over a year ago Marcel provided links to David Simkin's excellent websites. On there I found his favourable review of a book by Bernard & Pauline Heathcote, A Faithful Likeness - The First Photographic Portrait Studios in the British Isles 1841 to 1855, published in 2002. You may already be aware of it, but I wasn't. David kindly sent me an extract and it seemed quite well referenced. I've now tracked down a website still selling it and I have just ordered a copy (£10.99 + p&p). Here is a link if you would like to follow it up - A Faithful Likeness. Regards, Rob.
