Information and discussion on all aspects of British photographic history

Hi everyone,

During a seminar last week one of my first year students asked whether any of the figures we were discussing as notable early photographers were black. Reviewing them, I note that none was, and that the only name I could recollect from that period was Augustus Washington who emigrated from New Jersey to Liberia / Sierra Leone.

I wonder if anyone has any research material in this area that you can direct me to, particularly about any black British photographers from this period?

Thanks,

Peter Jordan-Turner

Whilst out of date, there might be someone at NPG who worked on this exhibition who could help you with your enquiries? Would like to see what you come up with!

Thanks, I'll follow it up and let you know.
