It's been suggested this might be a stereoscopic viewer for views about a 1/3 or so full format. Notman did produce child size views of his first 1859 series -- I had a few , now in Library and Arhives Canada.

OR is it a CDV viewer, like one patented in the USA in 1865 -- the American version has two flush lens,  not tubes, but a similar shallow box,studded with half-circle bone decorations.12543003068?profile=RESIZE_710x[/] decorarations?
