I am trying to find information on Henry Hughes & Son, who advertised as New London Photographic Stores (c.1890s). I have found reference that they produced a twin lens camera called the ‘Xela’ (anybody know anything about this or any other cameras). I think Henry Huges son Alexander Hughes (b. abt 1851 in Forest Gate, Essex – d. 1924 in Greenwich) who was a Optician, took over the company and that they had works in Forest Gate and Ilford, Essex (c.1917, but not sure where ?).

PhotoLondon has a Henry Hughes as “born in Southwark 1834”, but Alexander’s father was born about 1816?, not sure if this Henry is connected.

Any assistance appreciated.

  • As I said I think PhotoLondon info is incorrect as Henry Hughes  was born abt 1816 in St George in the East, Middlesex and died in 1879..His children were all born between 1847 and 1860 and none were called Henry.
