Dear all,
I am an art historian, currently writing a thesis at Ghent University on photographic details of artworks in art books (published between 1838 and 1940). It's an overall study on the use, appearance and selection of artworks as well as a quest to find the first photographic detail of an artwork. Inevitably, the influence the photographic medium has on the perception and distribution of these artworks.
Anyone who knows specific titles of books with extraordinary use of photographic details? A popular example is Kenneth Clarks One Hundred Details from the National Gallery (1938).
I am visiting the V&A archives soon to dig into their collection.
Kindest regards,
Elise Dupré

You might already know of Steven Joseph (English, but living in Brussels) and his publications on the history of Belgian Photography. His interest in the use of photography in relation to details of Artworks in his collection, recently purchased by the Rijksmuseum might be of interest to you.
