Rock and Simmons' comic and satirical CDVs

Hi, just joined.

I am compiling an index, with photos, to the CDVs published by Rock & Co and J Simmons & Co, both of London. These designs were all comic or satirical, poking fun at the CDV craze of the period.

I have identified that there could be around 400 different designs in total, and, from my own small collection along with the assistance of a private collector, the Universities of Yale and Edinburgh, the V&A, and the Barnstaple Museum, have traced images of around 70% of these designs.

This index will be an appendix to my rewrite of an open access research report on the illustrative output of Thomas Onwhyn (c1811-1886). It is now thought that he was responsible for the design and/or engraving of all the designs sought.

I have uploaded a pdf with 4 sample CDVs (2 from each publisher) and I would now like to hear from any collector who may have some of these cartes in their collection.

Please accept my apologies if this appeal reaches you by several routes and I am posting on several different forums, sites and groups.

I can be contacted by response to the post or by email grahamtitley at hotmail dot com.

Many thanks for reading and here's hoping!

Graham

    Hi Denis

I'd hoped for, but wasn't expecting a result! My intention is to produce a version of the index, with images, in April. I'll post it to this list for everyone to enjoy! It will also be published in my rewrite, later in the year. You can see more of Thomas's Crinoline works in my paper 'Thomas Onwhyn: a life in illustration' (pdf freely available on the internet).

    Queries on your cards:

Is your 'morning dress' a b/w with the imprint 'JS & Co, London'? (I have b/w with Simmons imprint, and colourised JS imprint (from the V&A!).

Is your 'engaged lady' black/white or colourised? I have b/w in my list.

Is the 'impudent wave' b/w or colourised? I have b/w, with an imprint of 'Simmons & Co, London' - but know that the design was reissued with the imprint 'JS & Co, London' and that there were possibly both b/w and colourised versions.

Is 'Squall' a b/w with the 'JS & Co, London' imprint? (I have the b/w 'Simmons' and colourised 'JS & Co' versions).

I assume that 'poor feet' will be b/w, with Rock & Co in the design? (some designs exist where the' Rock' element has been removed).

    Many thanks

    Graham

  • Hi Graham,

I have five of these. You probably have them already in your list, but just in case:

Our morning dress at the seaside

Carte de visite of a young lady who is engaged

    An Impudent Wave

    Caught in a Squall

    How's your Poor Feet

I am very interested in learning more about those cards as there seem to be quite a few mocking crinolines (a topic I am very interested in).

    Good luck in your quest

    Denis
