Roy Hungerford's niece Shenagh telephoned yesterday to tell us that Roy died earlier this week at the age of 94.
Members of the Historical Group of the RPS will have noted that the committee until recently included Roy as responsible for 'queries'. This was appropriate as he had a deep independent scholar's knowledge of historic cameras and lenses and he knew how to use them.
He was ready to pass on his knowledge to students and scholars around the world. It was always a
pleasure when Roy called in at the studio to tell us of his latest purchases of books and cameras from
the Charing Cross Road. His latest visit was a earlier this year but this time the stairs had become too
much for him. There must be a valuable archive in his flat in Sutton.
Perhaps the RPS and the Historical Group would be ready to receive people's memories for obituaries
in the RPS Journal and the PhotoHistorian.
Roy's funeral will be at 3.20pm on Thursday 5th March at the North East Surrey Crematorium, Lower
Morden Lane, Morden, Surrey SM4 4NU. There will be tea afterwards.
