S.W. Colyer, Photographer.

While on a short holiday on Exmoor, I came across a book by photographer S.W. Colyer called Lorna Doone Country. Published in 1947.

I have done an online search about Mr. Colyer and I found a list of other books such as; Cotswold Country, Unspoilt Dorset, Edinburgh, Shakespearse,s Country, and The Charm Of The English Lakes all published around 1930,s to 1940,s, but I cannot find any information about the photographer himself, or any technical details.

All the photos in the book are square, so he may have used a camera of the Rolleiflex type and the skies are well produced in monochrome.

Does anyone know any information about S.W. Colyer?

  • Agreed - I have several in the loft, can't remember which - are there any you particularly want?

  • Thanks Terry

You managed to get more information about him than I could.

I think his books are worth collecting.

    Kind regards

  • Kieth - years ago I tried to find out more about Colyer, but from memory didn't get far - I've no longer got my notes, all I can tell you is that he was Sydney William Colyer. The agency Bridgeman Images give his dates as 1913-59 - they might know more. I have a vague memory that Colyer was a pseudonym, not that it helps you much. Terry

    • I have tried as have you and it's sad that there's so little information about SWC.  Beautiful photographs, absolutely! Another similar photographer is the better known Val Doone and well worth seeking out. Good luck 👍

  • Thanks Chris.

    No further information unfortunately.

    Keith.

  • I'm late to the britishphotohistory party i.e. er....today! I too have been trying to find out more about SWC without much success. I've collected about six or so of his/her books but not much else. Did you ever get any further with your research Keith?

    regards, Chris N.
