Members of this group may be interested in an image by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe called "Quo Vadis?" shown on this page of a new online exhibition, "Inventing Modernism."
The photograph was reproduced in The Photographic Journal in a memorial article on Sutcliffe, where it was described as the second-best seller of his works. Despite this, I've only found one other print of this subject and have been unable to determine the date of the photograph. I made some inquiries about exhibition records from the Linked Ring, thinking "Quo Vadis?" might turn up there, but was unable to find anyone who had access to those records.
One clue might be the process used to make the print -- it is a Van Dyke Brown, made on textured paper. (There is just enough gloss that it could not be successfully scanned -- the image posted online was photographed with cross-polarization to eliminate the glare.) Has anyone seen any other Sutcliffes produced by this process? Does anyone know when it was most popular in the UK?
