Information and discussion on all aspects of British photographic history
Hello,
I am currently working on my thesis in the Photographic Preservation and Collections Management (PPCM) program at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, working with original issues of the Picture Post ranging from 1939-1945. I have a question regarding the covers of the Post. The issues which I have been working with, which were purchased in Toronto, have a blue cover, rather than a red. In addition, the date published on the cover of the magazine, is two weeks later than the one published on the inside pages of the magazine. My current assumption is that these were issues that were produced for sale in North America, hence the different colored cover, and the later date. Would any of you have any information regarding this matter? Many thanks! Hila Cooper

It was Stefan Lorant that explain this conundrum to me with a little embarrassment or as much embarrassment as he could muster. Apparently Henry Luce claimed 'copyright' for the use of the red and white cover with 'Life' magazine. At its most simplistic Edward Hulton respected this and the Canadian edition was indeed published two weeks later on the North American continent.
I'm away from my desk until early next month. If you would like to continue this conversation then I would be very happy to do so.
