  • I haven't had much time to interact with the site but I do get notifications of comments left on my profile, however when I go to the link there is no comment. The noticification gives you a taster of the message... the last one being 'My name is jane i saw your profile today at britishphotohistory.ning.com and i love it also became intrested in you,i will also like to know you more, and i want you to se...' Im curious as to how janebaby65@hotmail.fr can be 'interested' in me as my profile has hardly any info on it....... is this another case of spam or could it be a ruse to get members to log on? strange... and yes slightly annoying.

The membership could be moderated ie approved by the moderator and, if that is what members want, then it can be put in place. There have been three or four of these spamming attempts over the year and while it is irritating I am slightly reluctant to tighten membership. I'd like the blog to be as open as possible.

In each case once I become aware of the spam I ban the member which also removes all their postings.

It's annoying but there's not a great deal that can be done if someone is determined. That said, after a year of being up and running I am going to take a wider look at the blog and see how it might be enhanced which will include some greater protection for members.

  • Thanks Peter. I am sure the originator is a spotty faced high school student with "The Boys' Book of How to be Really Annoying". I agree, the membership should be tighter.

The RPS have a web page, RPS.org.uk I think. In Oz, we have a very active chapter in Melbourne that covers history, pictorial and digital with a monthly newsletter. Members are scattered across the continent so even though I live in an isolated area, I can still derive some benefit.

And a Happy New Year to you too.

  • John, I had the same rubbish and have sent it to the administrator. It is not membership dross, it is just stupid spam, probably part of a Russian phishing group that has infiltrated the membership lists. This site is very leaky and should be tightened up.
Happy New Year,.......Peter Knowlden from Canada who would like to know if the RPS still exists and if so where does it live these days?
