In 1853 Fenton was working at the British Museum and a year later was involved in the Crimean War. How did he attain the commission to do this and from whom?

Roger Taylor's essays in All The Mighty World. The Photographs of Roger Fenton 1852-1860 (Yale, 2004) are probably your best source. 

Messers Agnew and sons of Manchester commissioned Fenton, they were publishers. 312 prints were displayed in an exhibition on his return.
