Perhaps a long shot, but I’m trying to identify a North Yorkshire photographer who just put his initials on his postcards.

I recently purchased a couple of cards, with similar initials, one was of the Farndale Show, postally used from Kirkbymoorside in August 1910,. The other, seen here, I have now identified as having been taken outside St. Mary's Church, Church Houses, Farndale East; it looks like they are waiting for Godot!

I’ve also seen examples with the same initials on the Helmsby Archive, in their “Around and about” photo album, one of Farndale Band (HA09448) and one of Lastingham Church (HA09358). However, they don’t know the parochial photographers identity.

Any assistance in identifying the photographer would be gratefully received.12800926657?profile=RESIZE_710x

    • I've been in contact with the Helmsley Archive, the current Town Clerk responded, although they have a few similarly initialled cards in the archive, but they don't know whose initial these are. I've seen a lot of Hayes cards, but his cards are clearly marked with his name. Ditto Ross of Whitby.

  • A search of Kelly's Directory of N. & E. Ridings of Yorkshire, 1913, parts 1 & 2, revealed 140 results for a primary occupation of “photographer”. Of those only 4 had a surname beginning with “A”. Only one had a Christian name beginning with “H”, however, Harry Abba [sic] was a photographer at 48 Holderness Road, Hull. Is it likely that someone over 50 miles away would be a parochial photographer of North Yorkshire!?

  • Does anyone know how to filter better on Ancestry? I specified North Yorkshire, it has that option, but results are for Yorkshire. Not sure that I have the time and inclination to go through 27,000+ results.12804604285?profile=RESIZE_710x

  • What are the initials?

    What are the initials?

I suppose your best hopes would be trade directories for Scarborough lfrom around 1910. And the 1911 census which lists of occupations.

    • Apologies, intended to add close ups once approved, but I had to go out!
