I did try to leave a message a few days back. I'm not sure if it got through.....
In essence, my relationship works back to William Merrifield through Richard, brother to your Samuel. Richard's son, William JG Merrifield married Rosa Alice Tapp in 1899 as you state. Only minor error in your email is that William and Rosa did indeed have two children but they also were son and daughter, William and Rosa, who were always known as Billy and Rosie. Rosie never married, but Billy married Ida Elliot and their daughter (an only child, I believe) was Daphne. I inherited my material through Rosie.
Amongst all the material I have are some 60 odd stereograph photos. Most of these are scenes of Tavistock and the surrounding countryside, rather than people. Each is numbered in what looks to be a contemporary script, going up to about 212. So I'm guessing that on William's death in 1885 they were divided between the librarian's children giving about 60 each. There is a couple with people and I wonder if they are "posed" family members. Have you any of known provenance we can use for comparative purposes? I'll happily send photocopies.
Given that you have quite sensibly limited your researches, how may I best help you?
And last but not least, how may I buy a copy of your book? I'd love to buy one but I've failed completely to find one on the net.
I have quite a lot of Merrifield memorabilia, much of which is family tree related, in letter and written form, rather photographic. With no disrespect to this site, I wonder if we might move to a different platform? My email is jstapp@aol.com. Perhaps we could try a Skype or Whatsapp call? I can talk so much more quickly than I can type!
Incidentally, William and Rosa did indeed have two children, but they were also called William (b 1900) and Rosa (b 1901). William Junior married Ida Eliot and Daphne was their daughter, born in 1925. Rosa died a spinster in 1980 and it is her papers that I have.
I live in Victoria Australia and have a keen interest in old photos from 1850-1900. In particular stereographic views, carte de visite, glass and tin plate photographs. I am the ggg granddaughter of a very early Devon photographer William Merrifield, whose work has been greatly forgotten in the 21st century.
