The announcement of photography’s invention in January 1839 introduced a ‘new power’ into British life that was soon exploited by those interested in commerce, science, culture, journalism and art. This day-long symposium considers how the first fifty years of photography in Britain intersected with the nation’s growing modernity, revealing photography’s crucial role in making Britain the society it is today.
