Collectors request.

Hello, my name is Julia Green and have just recently joined this group.  I am particularly interested in the cdv/cabinet world of photography and more specifically the work of two of my photographer ancestors.  I began collecting their works around 18 months ago and like most collectors search on-line daily in the hope of finding examples .... so, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to ask if anyone has any photographic works by R.V.GREEN, COVENTRY or his brother A.V.GREEN, ATHERSTONE, I would love to hear from you.  At the moment I have around 60 cdv’s and cabinet cards of the GREEN brothers but they were long standing photographers so I’m hopeful there’s more to find! I’m also confident that I’m going to learn more about Victorian photography from other members in the group.

  • Hi Julia. These two photos are of my great great grandmother and her children, circa 1880. I have a lot of information about all three of 10923398473?profile=RESIZE_710x10923398661?profile=RESIZE_710x10923398675?profile=RESIZE_710xthem which you might be interested in.

  • Hi Julia, That's a super picture of a Coventry street I haven't seen before!  I am researching the clothing and will look into the card stock as you suggested - that is a good idea!  Thank you for your help.  I will keep an eye on this thread in case pictures of the studio furniture and props appear.  Felicity

  • Hi - I don’t have a timeline for the card stock used but yours is certainly later than the Penny farthing one.  The cdv’s that I have that have the same back are 1880’s I think. Sadly there is no record of sitters.  I wonder if you are able to date the clothing..dresses and sleeve style are always a good clue.  The props used within the studios could also help to date a photo although the date range could be wide, Id be happy to give an opinion on date if you want to show the front of your photo. There are also Facebook groups that specifically date old photos - might be worth a try; also have you looked at the trading years for the company RV has bought his card stock from, looks like Holmes Sadler and Holmes, Manchester? (Bottom of the cdv). I’ll try to attach the pic of RVs studio.....9780370458?profile=RESIZE_710x

  • Hi Julia, Thank you for the very quick reply!  So the photos with Broadgate and White Street on the back must be from 1879-1891 - that is very helpful!  I would love to see the photo you have of R.V. Green's studio.  To attach a picture to your message, just click the 'image' icon in the formatting line of a message.  I have attached a picture of the back of one of my old family photos.  This is different to the back of the penny farthing picture on this thread.  Would you know what dates which backs were used for his pictures?  Are there any records surviving of people who sat for photos?  I'm trying all the detective work I can to narrow the dates down and you have been a great help so far!  Felicity9778580092?profile=RESIZE_710x

  • Hi Julia,  I have some photos taken at R V GREEN studios, Coventry - Broadgate and White St.  Could you let me know what dates these studios were active please?  I am trying to match them with people on the family tree.

  • Hi Julia, I came across your post through Google as I was looking up R V Green photographer of my in-laws ancester. Is it possible for you to date the back if I post it, please? I did notice you haven't been on here for some time, but hope you get some sort of notification. Thank you mandy
  • Hi Julia, Haha, yes I guess you have to ask! Sadly, I won't be able to pass this on to you, if you are ever up in Edinburgh you are welcome to come and see it for yourself!  Julie

  • Hi Julie, thank you so much for posting these images... my collection is all portraiture so it’s interesting to see this, although it’s a bit odd isn’t it..it certainly looks like those items are floating.  I understand that this Cdv is part of the collection but may I ask if items are ever released back to family members?  I think I know the answer but I have to ask ha!

    Thanks again

    Julia

  • Hi Julia, We have this CDV in the Howarth-Loomes Collection at National Museums Scotland. I will have a look at the actual card next time I am in the stores as the handlebars and pedal on the right look like they have been suspended, I can't tell from our photo! Best Wishes, Julie 2768209857?profile=RESIZE_1024x10242768209492?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024
