Is anyone able to identify for me who the New Zealand photographer S. C. Hall was? He or she seems to have been active during the period from the 1940s to the 1960s and specialised in hand coloured landscape photographs signing them "S. C. Hall / A.R.P.S." Thank you.

I can confirm that Samuel Hall who joined the Society in 1945 is the same person as "S. C. Hall." Signatures on Samuel Hall's World War One Army file are a match for the signatures on the hand coloured photographs.

Thank you to Joan, Natasha and Michael for helping me solve this mystery.
Hello, thank you for answering my enquiry regarding S. C. Hall. I have identified who Samuel Hall was but I am not 100% sure if he is the same person as S. C. Hall. A second christian name was not given for Samuel in is birth, marriage, death or military records. The photographs I have seen have always been signed "S. C. Hall." I will do some more research to determine if they are the same person. Joan - I also have a copy of his photograph titled "Serenity", the view shows Lake Wakatipu, the tree was a well known landmark. I will contact the Auckland Libraries to see if they have further information.
I have shown the information I have regarding Hall on my website - here http://canterburyphotography.blogspot.co.nz/2015/04/hall.html
kind regards
Tony
Samuel was not gi
I can't offer any clues, but I can tell you I bought a print of "Serenity by S.C.Hall/ARPS" on one of my trips to NZ in the 1980s. It is not in great shape but there is a sticker on the verso of the cardboard mount that indicates: "Bewdley" G.W.D. (1947) Ltd. Wellington
I've tried Auckland Libraries' Photographers database but no records are coming up. Now that Dr Pritchard has provided some information, it might still be worth contacting the Sir George Grey Special Collections at Auckland Libraries, the photo librarian there is very helpful (I used to work at AL) and is a member of this site. Email: specialcollections@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz. Hope that helps.

I have checked the RPS membership records for you and a Samuel Hall joined the Society in 1945. His address was given in 1947 as Architectural Branch, property Division, GPO, Wellington, New Zealand; another private address is given from the mid-1950s, again in Wellington. Samuel Hall gained a Society Associate in 1945 and resigned from the RPS in 1960.
