Several Hills & Saunders CDVs I've seen refer to a Yorktown studio, (see here for an easily posted example: http://whowerethey.wordpress.com/category/photographer/hills-saunders/ ), but - unless they ventured across the Pond and this is the place where Britain lost the American war! - I have been unable to pin down where it is. It may well have been a garrison town like Sandhurst and Aldershot, but not one I can positively identify, which leaves me feeling rather dopey.
Can anyone help please?
Comments
I have now managed to 'approve' the two 'missing' comments from (from John and Larry - see below), and thought it worthwhile explaining for anyone else who may have struggled with the same difficulty that although it appears impossible to do this on either an iPad or an iPhone (I don't know whether it has anything to do with the OS version one uses, but both are fully updated), it works perfectly on a Mac. However, I see no reason why I would want to first see and approve comments on any blog post I make here, so have reset that particular option to allow all comers to post replies (I fully trust that you'll all be nice!).
Thank you to all who have replied. It is greatly appreciated.
There is also a photograph of a Yorktown Church and Lake, Camberley taken in 1907 (www.francisfrith.com) which I came across whilst 'surfing''. Not much help I know but may be of interest?
Best wishes Chris
Thanks to to Keith. Much appreciated. I'd gone along the same path, but not as far!
Yorktown is a part of Camberley, Surrey. My sister attended school in Camberley in the 1950s/60s and I remember references to "Camberley & Yorktown". I hope this helps, best wishes.
According to my 1866 Imperial Gazetteer, "York-town, a chapelry in Ash parish, Surrey, near Tongham r. station and near Aldershot. It was constituted in 1851; and it has a post-office under Farnborough Station.Pop., 1407. Houses, 256. The living is a p. curacy in the Diocese of Winchester. Value, £198. Patron, the Bishop of W." I would imagine that the Surrey County Archives could tell you more.
Yorktown seems to be part of Aldershot. Have a look at the British Newspaper Archive -
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ and try the Old Maps website -

I couldn't pinpoint it myself, but it would make sense if it was around the York Road/York Crescent area.
