GEORGE SHAW 1818-1904

I'm working on a project about the pioneer Birmingham photographer George Shaw, who, it's sometimes claimed, made the first daguerreotype in the city.  I am keen to establish details of Shaw's networks amongst C19th photographers and scientists.  I'm particularly interested in his work with Dr John Pecry MD.  Shaw was elected a member of the Photographic Society in 1853 and became President of the Birmingham Photographic Society in 1857. Any sitings of references etc would be most…See More

It seems to me that if there are enough people in the area with an interest in some aspect photographic history, we could greatly augment the joy of such an interest by meeting up for social occasions, workshops, discussions and equipment reviewsSee More

Dear Pete, There are several subject upon which it would be a good idea to discuss with you. Ranging from Priestley to Sherrington/JMuir Wood & Barry. I see that you will be giving a presentation on Birmingham Police's use of photography. With reference this use of photography for surveillance purposes there is a rather interesting daybook/journal in Wiltshire Records Office which has printed record sheets with attached albumen prints (headshots) of approximately 20 individuals prosecuted and deported for minor offences ( ie stealing potatoes from a a field etc.,) Taken in a local photographic studio with somewhat incongruous backgrounds.

I seem to have lost your contact details since you left Birmingham Library.

Kind Regards  Michael Gray
