George Sherriff

George Sherriff ( 1856 - 1908 ) was President, and later Honorary President, of the Falkirk Amateur Photographic Association between 1891 and 1900. We do not have a documented reason as to why he was unable to attend the studio for the 1898 Office Bearers photograph although, his son, also George Sherriff ( 1898 - 1967, Botanist ) was born that year so there may be a connection. Although he lived nearby in Larbert, this photograph was taken by T.R. Annan & Sons in Glasgow. The Grandfather of George Sherriff ( 1856 - 1908 ), another George Sherriff, was an engineer trained by James Watt.The Falkirk Herald of 21st December 1889 reports on a lecture at a meeting of F.A.P.A. entitled The History of Art Illustration and its Relationship to Photography at the present time. Their capital letters. It was delivered by J.Lay Annan, Secretary of the Glasgow Photographic Association. To date, we have been unable to determine if J.L. Annan is of the same pre-eminent Annan family.
