This was taken in Ireland after 1882. Note the Good Conduct Stripe on the lower left sleeve (uniforms changed in 1882 the Good Conduct Stripe now being worn on the left - this is how we can date this). William also has a Stripe on his upper right sleeve, he was a Lance Corporal. Looking at this uniform it would appear that the facing colour on his collar is different from his tunic. His tunic would have been red - all infantry regiments wore red tunics at this time. Each regiment had different coloured facings. We cannot identify the badge on his collar - all we can say is it is not South Wales Borderers. If his collar facings were blue this would denote he was a member of a Royal regiment ie one that had the word Royal in its title. Not easy to tell on a black and white photo.(Info from SW Borderers Museum, Brecon to me in response to my query.)
